Isn’t it the time of the year to start making resolutions again? But how often do you stick to accomplishing them? Probably never.
Don’t feel bad, you’re not alone. I’ve been guilty of that too. However, for this year, I’m not going to make any more resolutions. I’m going to make challenges instead.
Leo Babauta of Zen Habits has created THE POWER OF LESS Challenge Forum and he is inviting you to sign up to the forum to make a public commitment to start a new habit for the year.
According to Leo: “Forming a new habit is better than making a resolution, because if you use the effective habit-change principles in The Power of Less, the habit will stick with you much longer than the resolution.”
And the purpose of making a public commitment is so that it will hold you accountable and motivates you to follow through to form the new habit.
THE POWER OF LESS Challenge is a 30-Day challenge, whereby you have to dedicate at least 10 minutes of your time each day to exercise your new habit. It could be meditating, clearing your desk, doing 50 push-ups, reading a book, and so on.
Leo’s advice is to work on creating one habit at a time instead of multiple habits so that you have more focus.
If you have more than one habit you wish to create, you can set another challenge for another 30 days after the first 30 days, and then so on and so forth.
And not only do you have to post your challenge on the forum, but you also have to report your progress daily until the end of the 30-Day.
I have already signed up and announced my challenge publicly on the forum that I will create a new habit of waking up at 6.30am every morning from Mon-Sat. On Sun, I’d just sleep in.
To make it more challenging, I’ve also announced that should I fail to wake up at the specified timing on any day from Mon-Sat during the 30-Day challenge, I will buy a copy of Leo’s new book “The Power of Less” to give to one lucky guy/gal on the forum.
So the greater number of days I fail to wake up on time, the more copies I’d have to buy to give out.
I’m doing this because I want to be absolutely committed to creating this new habit. You have to make it a MUST if you want to accomplish something. If it’s only a wish or a good-to-have, you’ll never accomplish it.
Currently, there are already 1318 members on the forum as I write this blog post.
I’d suggest you head over to THE POWER OF LESS Challenge Forum now to post your new habit creation challenge.
It’s a great way to start the New Year and to make 2009 a great year.
Cheers~
